Weyrling J'myn on Blue Nith

Player: Fox

Character Name: Jermyn
Age: 14 (4.12.4663)
Rank: Apprentice jeweler, Weyrling

Description: Unusually small for his age, five feet tall. He is quite pale, sallow faced, too thin, little musculature, and though several of his baby teeth have fallen out, they are slow to replace themselves. His blonde hair is very thin but meticulously combed over to one side by his doting mother. His hands are long fingered and clever, however. This is his one redeeming feature which he uses to his advantage when working with the delicate jewelling items.

Personality: Jer tends to be quiet and shy for the most part. His mother is always attached at his side and tends to do all of his talking for him. He has few friends because he is often too weak and tired to play. He became “ill” sometime when he was around ten turns and never quite recovered.

Gender/sexual preference: Male, heterosexual

History: Jermyn was born to two simple workers, not quite drudges, who are employed at the Smith hall. He was an absolute joy to his mother who feared childbirth and hadn’t expected such a robust baby after a long and difficult pregnancy. Throughout Jer’s childhood he was a normal happy boy. Neither clever nor too skilled he was expected to follow in the footsteps of his parents into the workforce of Pern.

His father, however, was already largely discontented with his own nowhere life and became jealous that the boy had stolen his wife’s joy from him. Feeling that he was going to spare the boy from his own dreary existence, he began to systematically poison his own son through his food and drink. But not being a particularly intelligent man himself he was not using enough of a strong poison to actually ever kill the child. Slowly he did see his son start to degrade though. Jermyn began to sleep longer and play less. He strength began to wane and his position of bossiness among the other children was stolen from him as he turned into a practical ghost of a human being. His mother became frantic with her ministrations as she forced Jermyn to stay in more, day after day, until all he had left to him was a comfortable bed and any books she could bring to his fingertips. So he began to read.

As a result his body continued to deteriorate. The healers investigated often but usually left scratching their heads, assuming it was one of the wasting diseases that took the elderly sometimes. All they could prescribe was a heartier diet and moderate exercise, which has ironically kept him alive all this time.

At the age of twelve Jermyn fiercely insisted on taking a craft, regardless of his usually useless body. The Jewelry Craft accepted him since he had developed an inventive mind and deft careful hands. Normally the apprenticeship would have moved him into the dormitories, but his mother unwittingly bartered with the Journeymen to allow him to stay at home and be escorted to and from his classes each day instead. So even throughout his short apprenticeship he was at the mercy of his dull witted father’s deadly hands.

Finally, some apprentices were taken South to sell some wares and learn that part of the trade. Jermyn was selected out of pity and kindness. Though the very thought of the trip threw his poor mother into a panic, Jermyn’s father was the one who finally commanded that he be allowed to go, on the odd hope that the trip /between/ on the dragon would kill him.

Fortune thanked the child survived the trip, though he needed a long rest even after the short trip through the nothingness. Their first stop was Mountain Song Weyr where they would camp for two days to peddle their wares to the dragonriders…
