Weyrling C'valor on Bronze Maniath

Player: T'star

Name: C'valor (Cavalor)
Age: 18 (08.04)
Rank: Bodyguard, Weyrling

Description: Mid-brown hair falls neatly in place in an unremarkable style. Actually everything about him seems to be designed /not/ to be remarked on. His features are regular but completely average. There was nothing extraordinary about his soft hazel eyes. He is average height, standing about 6', he's also on the stocky side, though muscle rather than fat.

Personality: Cavalor is a bodyguard and has been since he was a very young child. This has left its mark on him. He has firmly grasped the fact that as a bodyguard he's expected to do /anything/ to keep his charge alive. He's serious, though not quite to the point of grimness. He has an odd view of his own self worth. He's not suicidal but he definitely places other people's safety far above his own. After all it's his job to do so, right?

Gender/preference: Male, Heterosexual

History: Cavalor's history began the year Cove Hold started having problems. The old Lord Holder had died abruptly leaving no clear heir as his only two children were twin boys. It ended in a challenge, a duel, and the younger brother (by 20 min) winding up named the new Lord Holder. The older brother, Laske, retreated to a smaller cot hold under the demesne of the new Lord Raske.

Cavalor was simply found and taken in. Or that's what he's been told. He bears a resemblance to the Lord Holder, but only enough to give the gossips to feed off of. He was a strong boy for his 3 turns so the Lord, suspecting there could be problems in the future for himself and his turn old daughter, turned the boy over to his own captain of the guard for training.

By the time he was five, he was well able to follow her around and keep her out of trouble, for the most part. By the time /she/ was four she figured out he couldn't tell her no without getting into trouble from the Captain of the Guard (whom Cavalor very much viewed as his father.). She began to take advantage of the fact and deliberately go out of her way to put him in awkward situations.

Her father thought it funny. His Captain, Bant, was far less so. Cavalor continued his training as neither child was old enough to really stay out of adult supervision to make his body guarding more than on-the-job training at this point.

When she was 5 Cavalor foiled a kidnapping attempt simply by being there. The kidnapper hadn't expected anyone else to be present and hesitated just after he came through the window. Cavalor kicked him in the shins, he yelped, and that was the end of that story. The man also never admitted who hired him so the incident was forgotten.

Layri, the Lord's Daughter, really didn't seem to realize Cavalor's true purpose. He was mobile furniture for her, and as she grew it became a challenge for her to see if she could give him the slip. This usually wound up with /both/ of them in trouble. Her for her rare successes, and the trouble she usually caused on her failures. Him for letting her get away with it. Layri didn't much care, scoldings from a mere Captain had no affect on her. After all she was the only heir!

Cavalor ignored the worst of her attitude, it was her actions he had to worry about, and more importantly the actions she had a tendency to provoke. Especially as they both grew older, the girl seemed to delight in starting fistfights, just to force Cavalor into an position where he had to do something. He took her condescending praises afterwards expressionlessly.

By the time he was 14 he was fervently hoping she didn't start noticing /him/ when she started noticing boys. When she did start noticing when /she/ was about 14 she treated him like so much mobile furniture, though she did complain loudly (when her father couldn't hear it) that his presence was a sure way to flatten any chance she'd have at romance. By then he was so used to putting up with her moods he didn't even notice.

When Cavalor was 17 and Layri 15, their normal state existence changed. First, Lord Raske's wife was pregnant again. This state of affaires did nothing to improve Layri's temper as she had absolutely /no/ desire for competition, period. When a rider came shortly after a threadfall, to check with the ground crews, his dragon sniffed out Layri, and insisted she go back. Layri agreed mostly to spite her father and mother for their /audacity/ in having another child. Her parents agreed because, with the baby on the way a strangle hold wasn't necessary. Cavalor argued because initially he wasn't supposed to come along.

It took everyone a little while to get things sorted out, and it was the dragon who did it. A wise old blue, he finally just suggested that they take two candidates for the price of one. Cavalor agreed more because it let him keep an eye on Layri (he hadn't even considered letting his duty slip no matter where she went). The rider and hold agreed quickly as it finally /ended/ the argument, and the pair were sent packing off to Mountain Song.

Candidacy was a miserable time for him. Layri made it clear that he was very much unwelcome, and he had trouble keeping track of her. The Candidate classes he attended held no interest for him, after all he wasn't a candidate! He was just here to /guard/ one. He was also made painfully aware that he was the only one who seemed to take his duty that seriously.

The hatching day was a relief and a worry when it arrived. What would he do when she impressed? What would he do if she didn't? But the sands themselves were chaotic enough he didn't have time to worry about the future. He couldn't get close to Layri, she saw to that, but he did keep a nervous eye on the hatchings. If he had to he'd get in the way... He was not expecting the large, pale bronze that bullied his way up to him and decreed him his. Unfortunately Maniath turned out to be rather paranoid, and Layri was the first object of his paranoia.

Layri didn't help matters when she cornered C'valor and promised to make his life as miserable as possible and report his 'dereliction of duty' to her father. C'valor struggled with the two duties, gradually letting weyrling duties take precedence. His focus slowly began to shift, as much thanks to Maniath and an unexpected friend: Greenrider Arilla.

He seemed, outwardly to be settling, though he did progressively grow more fond of Arilla. Certain aspects of his behavior simply shifted to a new focus, and it's doubtful if anyone realizes exactly how deep his conditioning still runs. Things definitely seemed to stabilize until the night of the turns end gather, coincidentally a hatching for Monaryth's newest and largest clutch. He turned in early, never big on crowds... He and three others didn't wake up the next morning. He was the only one still breathing as Maniath Panicked.

Pets: none

Name: Maniath
Color: Bronze
Age: Less than one (Born 06.14.01)
Description: Pale, ghostly bronze sweeps up the sturdy muzzle and over massive eyeridges. It darkens gradually, almost imperceptibly so, down his neck and across his back to the bottom of his ribcage where the trend reverses itself over his heavy haunches and long tail, which is capped in a shade of bronze so pale it seems almost white, or perhaps silver. His wings are also broad and echo the darkest shade on his body, still hardly darker than sand. Striations of lighter hues mingle subtly across the sails, catching the light at odd angles, making him seem all the more ethereal.
Personality: Maniath is paranoid. A bright dragon, he trusts no one except C'valor, a detriment in a dragon. Everyone else is always out to take something from him, or harm something dear to him, in his opinion. Woe be to anyone who actually proves his paranoia to be founded. He trusts C'valor's judgment however, and he is learning to keep his suspicions to himself most of the time. Whether or not he comes fully out of his paranoia or not is debatable, but he will likely remain a pessimist. In his opinion C'valor is the only worthwhile human.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Physically Maniath is huge, this gives him a great deal of raw power, but he trades off short term speed and some agility. Mentally his paranoia makes him very alert and aware of what is going on around him, with a tendency to remember things that are out of place at least vaguely, though he has trouble retaining detail for any great length of time; however, his teamwork suffers as he does not trust anyone enough to work with them other than reluctantly.
