Weyrling Asha on Brown Cappellath

Player: T'star

Name: Asha
Age: 17 (1.1)
Rank: Candidate

Description: Her long hair is so black it is almost blue and falls in a gentle wave down to mid thigh. Her heart shape face is longer than it seems. Her long torso is built for singing. She has a classic hour glass figure, the chest and ribcage that give her vocal staying power preventing anything more streamline. For all the length of her torso, she is not overly tall, standing just at 5'7". Her facial structure is more refined than delicate. Almond shaped black eyes are soft for their crisp color, and her complexion is a honey gold.

Personality: Asha is usually a confident individual, intelligent, and friendly. Her entire life up to this point has wrapped around her ability to sing and her music. Which is why she is currently, for all intents and purposes, broken. She has become silent and sullen, less open, though no less perceptive.

Gender/preference: Female, bi-sexual

History: Asha was raised at the Harper Hall. The child of a journeywoman harper who hadn't wanted a child to start with, she was fostered at a very young age. One of the drudges at the hall took her in and raised her. Asha loved harper hall. From the time she was old enough to make out a tune she was humming along with the apprentices, as she grew older she began to sing along. Even young her voice was shaping up to be very good.

She wasn't formally apprenticed until she was 10 but she had been in unofficial training practically her entire life, and the apprenticeship seemed more, to her, like a formal acknowledgement of her normal life. Once she was formally apprenticed she started to be allowed to sing with other harpers in public. A pretty child, she loved the opportunities. The crowd meant little to her, the singing was everything.

Slowly she grew from a pretty child into a lovely young woman, and as she did so her musical horizons expanded somewhat. Her voice developed into a phenomenal range, though she was technically Contralto. She learned the basics of many instruments, though they never really held much interest for her. Her talents lay with her voice and her songwriting, for she took to composition as much as she took to singing.

Telgar's big gather, every year where they sponsored the great Runner Races they were famous for. Telgar had requested several harpers for the event. Asha was sent with a few journeymen, and the songs she had written. It was implied that this performance would be her final step to making journeyman herself. That was before the fire.

Someone in the Telgar Kitchens left the spare grease too close to the open flame and it ignited. The canines on the spit near by panicked and knocked the container over... the fire spread. Asha had been sent, as the most junior of the harpers, to fetch a few skins for the performance. She didn't know there was a problem until the heavy grease smoke had been forced down the still open door to the wine cellar. There was simply no getting under it, and Asha ran, abandoning the skins.

She couldn't see in the smoke and the kitchen was utterly unfamiliar. She passed out. Someone obviously found her before /too/ long for she woke up in the Hold Healer's office. When she spoke she was shocked to hear her own voice, for she croaked like a sick wherry. The healers weren't sure it was ever going to heal fully. She seemed to accept that, determining to heal as much as possible. She was still a harper, right?

Then she got back to the hall after the healer's cleared her. Her master, one of the voice masters at the hall, had already packed her bags. She'd anticipated not being /his/ apprentice anymore... at least not until they had managed to heal her voice. He informed her briskly that, with her voice damaged beyond repair, she was no longer useful to the hall and had been dismissed, completely. Then simply turned and walked away.

She was left standing in the courtyard with all her things, completely lost. How could she /not/ be a harper? She actually stood there for a candlemark, in shock. It was during class time so no one really noticed her, until a blue rider came to deliver a message. It wasn't a long delivery, but the blue, on Brineth by name, seemed to come to a decision. When Sh'ale came back /out/ of the hall, he asked Asha if she wanted to stand.

Asha asked where he was from, and when he said Mountain Song, she agreed. She couldn't be a harper anymore... and where farther from the Hall and the music that was now denied her than the Weyr farthest south?
