Honshu Weyrhold was founded during the 9th Pass by F'lessan, son of Lessa and F'lar of Benden Weyr. Only a harper could tell you how it was origionally set up, but there has been a distinct reversal of rolls from what was considered 'traditional' in Weyrs during the 9th Pass. Rather than the bronze who catches the senior gold becoming the Weyrleader, the Gold the Weyrholder's bronze catches is the Lady Weyrholder. When the Weyrholder dies, the senior gold's next flight determines who the next Weyrholder is, then it reverts back to the system previously described. This system has worked for the past nearly two hundred years, and no one has had any real cause to complain about it.
The Weyrholder is subject to the conclave, so it's very little different from any of the other Holds on Pern, apart from the 700 dragons that reside there in addition to humans. With two breeding golds, Honshu manages to hatch between 15 and 22 dragons per year. Everyone of eligible age is ushered onto the sands when a hatching comes around, along with anyone who expressed an interest from outside Honshu itself. There are usually between three and five times as many candidates on the sands as there are eggs hatching.
For all that there are fewer dangers than there were in the past, 2 or 3 weyrlings every turn are lost to between training, physical training, or other accidents. The dragon population, unlike the human population, is holding relatively stable. Honshu is the southern host to the yearly Games, which are a series of exibitions between dragonriders that involve flying, several precission betweeinging events, and many other contests. Held every third year, a victory from these contests is highly prized. More will be covered under the 'Pern' section of this webpage.
