Formed 73 years earlier by Mylai of gold Jeilisith, Delandri serves a unique role in modern pernese society. They are the only group that, as a whole, drills with firestone regularly. While dragon has never directly fought human, even in the current changing Pern, a flaming dragon not so high above head level has an intimidation factor that most often eliminates all need for combat. Which is how they were founded in the first place.

Lord Vele of Telgar chose to invade his neighbor to the southeast, Lemos. They were not expecting it. The watch rider summoned his messenger group which quickly restored the hold to its rightful owners. Then they had to guard the invaders from the people of Lemos long enough for a formal Conclave to be called!

Since then Delandri has been fiercely neutral. They have stuck stubbornly to the old traditions, with only some minor modifications: the Weyrwoman completely runs Delandri. The Weyrleader is her second in command but is a distinctly subordinate roll.  As they have clashed with Honshu periodically this does make some sense. Taking the Dragons out of the fight with a single order from a gold is infinitely preferable to the alternatives.

They are distinctly unpopular, and the current Weyrwoman Chantal doesn't look eager to change that. Everyone wants Delandri keeping everyone /else/ honest, and overtly resents that Delandri keeps /them/ honest as well. There have been instances of corruption amongst the ranks at Delandri, but they have been dealt with ruthlessly. There have been efforts to disband Delandri in the past, all have failed, but with the most recent one a bare 10 turns earlier, and a very new Weyrwoman the threat of another attempt is very real.  Especially after the Bitran raid and the subsequent conclave.  Delandri's funding was pulled even though their charter was not.

Since the return of thread, things have not improved much. Delandri is caught between the paniced masses and those who blame Dragonriders for the return of thread in the first place. While Lyrrath's spectacular 53 egg clutch, and Jettath's impressive 25 egg addition have given some hope, the losses are still staggeringly high (though the 400 deaths in the first threadfall have not been repeated in a single fall.)

Pelicath is due to lay sometime in the thirteenth month, and Lyrrath and Jettath both due to fly in the near future, but the tone about the weyr is grim.
