Playeremail: lionors@earthlink.net
PlayerIMs: ShadowReine
Charname: Myrana (Myran)
Age: 20 (4.02)
Rank: candidate
Description: Few girls stand this tall, at sixteen years old, Myrana is already
five ten or five eleven, and has an odd heaviness to her build. Combined with a
relative lack of feminine attributes, she would appear as a gangly adolescent,
not quite fully matured into a woman.
As if to compensate, she exaggerates what femininity she possesses. Her golden
blonde hair is worn long, loose when not working, braided up on her head when
she is. The features thus revealed are closer to handsome than pretty, but her
eyes are a startlingly attractive blue. She moves with a distinctly feminine
grace that might erase any doubts about her gender.
She tends to wear very feminine clothing...flowing skirts, etc...except when it
is impractical to do so.
Personality:
Myrana is a complicated person, but that is not often seen at first glance. The impression she gives to those who only know her a little, is of a feminine woman, who's interests are more in her clothes and domestic pursuits than the serious. She has a good sense of style, and the only time you will not find her dressed very carefully is when she's doing physical labor and wearing clothes she doesn't mind getting damaged. She is the kind of woman who is always late leaving for Gathers because she was still doing her hair.
Underneath that, though, is a strong willpower and determination. She will be who she will be, and she would rather be harassed, even ill-treated, than try to act 'normal'. True, she can be defensive, and she often tries to hide the truth, at least until people get to know her, and she gets to know them well enough to know they won't freak out too much. She cannot help but wish that things could be different, but not in the sense her family once hoped, or in any sense she can actually achieve.
Deepest of all is a desire to be accepted as she is. Yet, at other levels...Myrana is a fun person, she really does have a good sense of style and is willing to help those, male or female, less endowed in that area. In fact, she's earned the odd mark helping people decorate their weyrs since coming to Delandri...not everyone can color coordinate and stuff, after all! She is the life and soul of the party when there is one, and something of a hedonist, when it comes to good food, good wine and...well, other things, it's sometimes hard to get her to focus on duty, although she doesn't lack for courage.
Gender/Sexual Preference: Male (Mentally Female), Bisexual
History:
Myran was the second son of a man named Teran and his wife, Elissa. Almost twenty years ago, the couple realized they had no prospects where they were. Teran was the third son of a cotholder, with no inheritance and no interest in doing anything but farming. Elissa was a drudge at a minor hold near Fort. The two, once handfasted, went south, where there was lots of empty land, open for the claiming if one could work it.
Elissa proved fertile, and Teran felt he could provide for all of her children. The firstborn, a boy named Elran, would inherit their land, and he would help his other sons prove their own land, and find marriages for the daughters. He had no desire to be a Holder with a big H, but he did want to make sure that there would be enough to go around.
Myran was the second child, and after him came no less than four girls, one of whom showed an interest in healing...to which Teran reacted with, basically, 'One less marriage to find', promising to support her in apprenticing once she was old enough, for it was an appropriate profession for a female.
For, yes, Teran was somewhat traditional in his views. Men worked the land, women looked after the house and bred children. Yet, for the first few years of their lives, he was a good, loving, supportive father. Had it not been for Myran's 'problem', he would no doubt have remained so. There are some things, though, that any given individual can't deal with.
For the first twelve years of his life, Myran seemed fine. True, he had a tendency towards being effeminate, but Teran was confident he could deal with that, encouraging the boy to come out of the house and, of course, he had no choice but to work. Farm children work from a very young age, after all.
Then, as Myran hit puberty, he began to act even more effeminate. Fearing the boy might be gay, Teran decided hard work was the cure, but although he built muscles, nothing, it seemed, could stop him from acting like a girl. He refused to cut his hair, until his father held him down while his mother did it.
The arguments became more and more bitter until the fateful day when Myran admitted that he thought of himself as a girl, that he could not consider himself a boy. He'd tried, he'd tried really hard. He was fourteen.
Far from accepting Myran the way he was, Teran set out to cure him...and what he tried was a primitive form of aversion therapy, hitting or even beating the teenager every time he acted in a 'womanly' manner. Such abuse never actually works as a cure, but Myran learnt to pretend to be normal...most of the time. But every so often, things came out. And Myran became extremely withdrawn, even depressed. His life was utter misery, because no matter what his father did or
said, he still 'knew' deep within that he was intended to be a she.
It was the rider who was his salvation. It was a greenrider, flying sweeps from Delandri, who came upon the young man out in a field, crying over his lunch, and thankfully alone. Myran eventually told the man the entire story...and such things had been heard of before. Rare, yes, but not unknown. Clearly, too, the situation could not continue. Teran loved his son, but he was not able to accept his daughter as she was. Myran was fifteen, though. Old enough to seek employment elsewhere. More than old enough to leave his miserable life. The
rider was certain that the Weyr would take him in, especially given the
circumstances.
Teran did not want Myran to go. There was a shouting match, that finally devolved into physical violence...but that's not a wise thing in front of a rider. The greenrider, T'kan, intimidated Teran into backing down, and then simply asked Myran to come with him.
Which he did...and for now, cut off all ties with his family. That was three months ago, and Myrana has settled into the Weyr. Most people do not know she is really a he...in a new place, she's found she can live as a woman without problems...far, far happier...she's grown out her hair and acquired a suitable wardrobe. However, as the only thing she knows is farming, she's now trying to find a niche for herself. Hopefully as something better than a drudge.
There's one obvious solution. She can ask to stand for the clutch. A chromatic dragon, surely, won't care if her mind is a different gender from her body...right?
