PlayerIMs: zhKyrl
Charname: Kaleb
Age: 21 10.01.2402
Rank: Weyrling
Description:Kaleb is tall and lean, though not quite lanky. He has a tousle of redish brown hair that he keeps short, though not to the level of 'high and tight' so it always has a slightly shaggy look to it. His features are regular and as long as the rest of him. He's not a handsome man, but neither is he uggly. His eyes are a muddy hazel tending more towards brown than the blue or green spectrum. Green is only visible when he's about to loose his temper.
Personality:
Kaleb is patient and calculating, though he's gotten rather cynical over the 4 turns that Lyrrath has not flown. The responsibility for the other candidates weighs heavily on him. He enjoys his job as a guard and has considered many times going back to it. But duty holds him in place. While he currently socializes little with the candiates he is usually a very social creature, enjoing the periodic drink and comraderie, but his current position has made that level of familiarity difficult to obtain.
Gender/Sexual Preference: Male, Heterosexual
Dragon Sensitivity: 6 - Average Rider
History:
Kaleb was born to a pair of guards at Delandri Weyr. He has lived here all his life. He was being taught sword and knife work from the time he was very small under the assumption he would be joining Delandri's fighting force of guards when he was of age. He did not dissapoint his parents as he signed up for the guards as soon as he was old enough for training.
By the time he was 14 he'd made full guard status, and there was a clutch on the sands. He volunteered to stand for it, so his mornings were spent with the candidates, and his afternoons with the guards. At his first hatching he was left standing... and his second. And his third. When his fourth came around it was an enormous clutch of 10 eggs including a gold, which was thought to be a good thing given that Delandri's only gold was getting very old. It was thought this would be her last clutch.
It was. Kaleb was once more left standing, and to make matters worse the next morning Braea passed of old age... Her queen Sybrilaeth followed. Still, Kaleb and the other remaining candidates held out hope. A turn and a half to two turns shouldn't be too long... most of them were young enough they wouldn't be over age by then.
Then B'len started 'teaching' the weyrwoman, a young drifter by the name of Chantal. The tensions in the weyr grew visibly as he tried to shoulder both duties. Chantal didn't seem to know enough to know what wasn't getting done, but Kaleb saw it, as did many others. The candidate ranks started to thin out, and the mocking from the guards got stronger, though never when actual riders were around.
When Lyrrath showed no sign of rising at 2 turns of age, the candidate master gave up as did most of the oldercrop of candidates. Kaleb found himself in the position of actually /running/ the candidates. It was not a task he enjoyed, but still hope held true and he threw everything into keeping the candidates in shape and up to speed, but even that didn't last. As Lyrrath's third turn passed, the weapons drills became optional, though most of the candidates still showed up. Classes were canceled, they'd all been through them repeatedly, and Kaleb found himself wondering if it was all worth it. Right around Lyrrath's fourth year, they got an unexpected influx of new candidates. It was only four but it was enough to give some hope to the current candidates.
Then Chantal announced that Lyrrath would be flying soon. Kaleb wasn't sure he believed it but it was the only hope they had. He re-instituted classes with the old time candidates teaching the newer ones. Then came Lyrrath's spectacular flight and once again efforts redoubled, but there was only so much Kaleb could do. He was only a candidate. He wasn't the candidate master. There /was/ no candidate master and he had no real authority, though no one had thought to press that point just yet.
When D'enthe, the new weyrleader, mentioned he'd sent out for a candidate master, and gotten a favorable response, Kaleb was relieved, though a little nervous. What did that mean for him? Depending on when she clutched it was likely that Lyrrath's clutch would hatch too late for him to stand. He wasn't sure he wanted to go back to the guards, but he wouldn't have a choice if the new candidate master decided to hold too strictly to the age rules... Thus he's found himself in a rather untenable position, too stuborn to give up on it.
