PlayerIMs: zhKyrl
Charname: Jayk
Age: 14 11.4.2410
Rank: Weyrling/Apprentice Starcrafter
Description: Ash blond hair is kept short cropped, neatly combed. His features are regular, and almost smoothly bland. His jaw line is squared off, but draws his face into long, droll lines. His eyes are a muddy hazel, that can’t seem to make up its mind what color they want to be. He is tall for his age, with broad shoulders, and all the signs of being a handsomely built man eventually, but with none of the musculature to fulfill that promise, making him just look gangly.
Personality:
Jayk isn’t the brightest boy out there. Not chronically stupid, just rather slow on the uptake with a few exceptions. He has a wealth of commonsense and patience, some people would claim that is from having to deal with his firebrand of a sister, they may be right. He has an instinctive sense of spatial relationships, theoretical mathematics is the bane on his existence, though give him a problem that’s situational and he is rarely wrong. He just cannot seem to wrap his mind around anything that he can’t put to a concrete situation. Hand him the math for a celestial progression equation and he is lost. Tell him ‘figure out where this constellation will be in relationship to that one in four days’ and he has no trouble. He is a very strait forward person. He does not do well with word games and double meanings, which means he tends to take everything very literally. Subtlety isn’t entirely lost on him, but it’s something he has to be specifically watching for to catch. His rather ponderous methods of thought have garnered him a reputation as being close to a half-wit, something he has never managed to disprove, for while he is not overly bright, he’s not cripplingly stupid either. Though he is beginning to believe he’s as dumb as everyone says he is. After all if he weren’t why would they have ‘recommended’ he find something else to do?
Gender/Sexual Preference: Male, Heterosexual
Dragon Sensitivity: 7 - Very Sensitive
History:
Born to a pair of weavers at Telgar hold and Third out of five children Jayk was the calmest of the lot, his only sister (and the sibling immediately younger than he) was by far the most rambunctious. Because of the closeness of their ages (only two turns separated them), Jayk often found Jyra to be his best and closest playmate, when she wasn’t trying to show him and their older brothers up.
The downside of this was he was expected to keep her 'under control' and acting like a 'proper girl'. Which was, at the time, like asking the boy to throw a dragon. As a result he spent more time in trouble than she did. It worked, to a degree, to shape her up. She didn't want to get him in trouble! She didn't mind taking her own lumps, but Jyra was actually fond of her big brother.
It was something of a relief on many fronts, when the starcrafter suggested Jayk apprentice to the southern continent Hall, which was where most of the star-mapping and charting was going on. He had found Jayk accurately plotting out star charts from the ones he'd seen from working in the shop.
Jayk didn't last very long at the Star Hall. His tendency to mix up words in texts, and letters made him a laughing stock with the apprentices. And the equations that were required even of apprentices were more painful than the teasing. He couldn't ever get them /right/. They weren't usually even close, he couldn't even seem to handle the simple mathematical actions of addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Yet, his own master stubornly held on to him, trying to work around the mathematical issues. He had seen Jayk do the same problems with none of the math, in his head, to accurately produce the requested chart.
It only bought him a turn. By the end of his first turn at the Star Hall he had garnered a reputation as a complete half wit, to the point he was starting to believe it himself. His master was at his wits end as to how to get the boy to do on paper what he did so easily in his head. Then word came about Delandri's clutch. Master Meggellan suggested Jayk stand. He also sent word to Master Kevron at Delandri that boy was comming and the confusing dicotomy of his mathematical ability and his /actual/ ability.
